The Story & Vibe
City Pop and its Faces Japanese Pop After Dark Japan’s economic miracle up until the 70s, and its booming urban growth, led to a form of global confidence that would influence the development of the aesthetic of City Pop. Musically marrying Japanese influences like New Music and Japanese folk rock, and Western influences of jazz fusions, disco, soul, and synth, City Pop created an era-defining sound between the late 70s to the 80s. The lyrical themes range from heartwarming to heartwrenching, from spirited to depressed, and both lyrically and aesthetically, a peculiar yet insightful trend of a self-assured, dynamic 70s to a darker, doubtful 80s, strongly coinciding with the culmination to the economic bubble. Through this curation, we listen to this slow transition that shows a sample aural landscape of City Pop.
