The Story & Vibe

Join us at the National Library of Scotland for a captivating celebration of Hugh MacDiarmid's iconic poem, “A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle,” as we mark its 100th anniversary! This remarkable 2,685-line work, originally published in 1926, weaves together colloquial Scots with lyrical and literary flair, exploring Scotland's cultural and political landscape. During the event, you'll enjoy an engaging talk featuring editors Alan Riach, James Robertson, and Jim Mackintosh, who will delve into the poem's creation and its lasting impact. Expect to hear short readings from both the original poem and the new response volume, “Ayont the Thistle,” which showcases over 70 essays and poems. Plus, there will be a chance for you to join in during the audience Q&A! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore the themes of MacDiarmid’s work and see how they resonate today. We can’t wait to see you there!
