Spaces for Art | 11 Oct

We're back with a special edition of our Spaces for Art walk around Mumbai's Art Block, to celebrate the ongoing centenary celebrations of pioneering artist Satish Gujral. Join us on a walk that reveals the space(s) behind Mumbai's modern & contemporary art movements. We start in Rampart Row in the mid-20th century with the beginnings of modern art making and display in a newly independent, post-colonial city. We “visit” spaces that have disappeared, fallen out of use, and some that bravely continue to stay current: an artists’ centre, restaurants that became creative addas and new galleries for a young country. This special edition of the walk will conclude with a walkthrough of "The Modernist Returns: Satish Gujral 100', on view at the NGMA Mumbai. We'll discover how seamlessly Gujral "moved through medium after medium: drawings and collages, abstractions built like walls, sculpture in wood, metal, stone and ceramic, murals across public India, and finally architecture..." The exhibition travels to Mumbai with original works from every phase of his life, along with rare archival works and photographs. This event is in collaboration with The Gujral Foundation.
